In this day and age, it is difficult to know just how safe you and your identity are. There are so many instances now days in which thieves are getting hold of your personal information and using it to their own advantage and your own disadvantage. They start making purchases in your name, racking up massive bills, and in many cases, you never know it until it is too late. In identity theft, your entire life can be uprooted and affected from your credit report to your peace of mind.

Therefore, it is important to understand your options for identity theft protection. Taking the steps you need to right now can help prevent you from becoming a victim and keep your personal information safe all at the same time. The good news is that you have many options.

Shred The Evidence, it's not only safe, but important. There are many different kinds of papers that you should shred. Remember, many thieves are going right through peoples garbage to get what they need. Therefore, you should never just throw away important papers. You should be shredding items such as:

* Old Credit Cards

* Pre-Approved Credit Card Applications

* Financial Papers

* Credit Card Receipts

* Bank Account Papers

* Utility Bills

By shredding these, instead of throwing them away, you are taking steps in identity theft protection. Make sure that anything that could contain personal and identifying information is shredded. Watch Your Back when you need to use an ATM, make sure that no one is around. Sneaky thieves like to look over your shoulder and see what your pin number is. This can provide them with access to your bank account, which means access to your personal information.

Keep An Eye On Your Checks since they are extremely easy to steal. If you really want to protect your identity, make sure that you take the following steps in regards to your checks:

* Have new checks mailed to the bank

* Never have new checks mailed to your home

* Never mail checks from your home

* Go directly to the post office to mail checks or payments

The mail is still very unsecure, when you are at work or not at home for any reason, your mail box is a target for identity thieves. It is important to monitor your mail. Make sure that you are getting your bills each month, make sure that payments to you or credit cards mailed to you arrive in the appropriate amount of time.

It is important to be vigilant. If ever you do not receive any bills or other items on time, you need to be contacting the originating company to inquire about it. Keeping on top of things is the best form of identity theft protection that you could ever think of.

You should also make sure that you are monitoring your credit report to ensure that no fraudulent activity is taking place. If you find any instances, it is important to report them immediately to the appropriate authorities.
